#11 : My Favorite Prick Flicks

Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser in The Mummy

You’ve heard of “chick flicks”? Well, the opposite of a chick flick is a prick flick, of course! I like testosterone swelled films too, even if I happen to be a woman. Women have testosterone too, you know. A really good prick flick gets you excited, never stops being fun, and yet has somethings most other crappy ones don’t…fewer (or no) one-liners and good acting. There’s nothing worse than an action flick with bad acting and one liners galore. Of course some are meant to be all about t’n a and no substance. Sometimes that’s alright. But mostly I just want to watch a really good, never boring film no matter the genre. And only in recent years has the action genre become more substantial and less full of fluff, gratuity and painfully bad acting…well, not counting The Rock and his films. Oy! But I guess every generation has a Van Damme: A Bulky foreign looking “hottie” who looks better when he doesn’t try and act…or speak. Just kick a little ass, take off your shirt and dance puppet! Is it getting hot in here… Prick flicks don’t always have to be man-centric. Prick flick are all about alot of action, alot of sexy and alot of ass kicking, whether it’s men or women kicking ass…or showing some (*wink*).

Anyway, below are some of my favorite prick flicks (in no particular order):

  • The Bourne Identity & The Bourne Supremacy
Perhaps my favorite action films of the past decade or so, The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy simply rock! I was surprised Matt Damon could play an action hero so well. But then, the writing is good, and stories are solid and the international aspect made it all the more intriguing and thrilling. I look forward to seeing The Bourne Ultimatum out in theaters in 2007. Yay!
  • The Italian Job
This was actually a decent remake of the 1969 original with Michael Caine. No gratuity, just adrenaline, and the film stayed on point with the story without any of those annoying sidetrips too many action films take like that randomly stupid orgy scene in The Matrix Reloaded. Charlize Theron was a pleasant surprise and I kind of always enjoy Mark Wahlberg.
  • Underworld
The concept of this film’s what drew me to it (and it’s sequel). The war between werewolves and vampires. How awesome is that. And the special effects were amazing. The werewolves were bloody scary. And the hybrid creature Scott Speedman’s character, Michael Corvin turns into is just amazing. Almost beautiful. Ass kicking and all.
  • Charlie’s Angels
Oh what fun. Makes me want to look that hot and kick that much ass. The action sequences were over the top and I was loving every minute of ‘em.
  • The Professional: One of my favorite films of all times, though there’s a mushy (endearing) element to this film with Leon’s affection for Matilda, it’s a whole lot of ass kicking. I especially love the dynamic between Jean Reno’s Leon and Gary Oldman’s psychotic Stansfield.
  • Sin City
Absolutely stunning visualy, bloody violent and damned fun. I never much cared for comic books, but after seeing what can be done to depict a comic book through the media of film, bring ‘em on. I can’t wait to see Sin City 2 and Frank Miller’s 300 in theaters 2007.
  • Desperado
Antonio Banderas was never so fun, hot and interesting (for me anyway) as he was in Desperado. I love the Mexico setting, the brown, the dust. Sort of like a western set in Mexico in modern times. And Salma Hayek was great to watch. They make a smokin’ couple.
  • The Matrix
When I first saw this film before the buzz, I was blown away. The action sequence, the writing, the concept are all just what you want to see in a sci-fi action film, especially with Keanu Reeves’ limited dialogue. Didn’t much care for the second in the trilogy and didn’t even bother with the third. I guess, the first is always the best.
  • The Mummy
I love, love, love films set in the 1920s/1930s and films set in ancient times. The Mummy is perhaps the best written, acted (as far as chemistry among the cast goes) and directed action comedy I’ve seen in the past decade. It’s not the best movie ever, but it’s just a well put together, fun, funny and adventurous film with smart writing, which is rare in action films. Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz and John Hannah seemed to have great chemistry. I can, and have watched this film over and over again.

I don’t have much to say about chick flicks. I hope you don’t mind that I just comment to you personally here.

You left a thought provoking comment on my 9rules note about poetry being code. I like your thinking.

I just saw the movie “Half Nelson” and loved it. It had great characters, compelling acting, a believable but not cliched story, and some great philosophical tidbits to chew on. I don’t know if you’ve seen it, but I recommend it. Not much flash, just great movie telling.

The directors also did “Hedwig and the Angry Inch”, which, though a very different toned movie, also had some great philosophical messages. They seem to like classical thinking.

Thanks for commenting David. I am thinking of seeing Half Nelson myself. I have so many films to see I may end up renting it when it comes out on DVD. I’ve never seen Hedwig.

As for the poetry code comment, i’m glad you appreciated my comment. I’ll be visiting your Glitteing Muse site which seems “enlightening”…

FINALLY someone who agrees that the mummy and the mummy returns rocks!!
Those shows still earn my award for favourite movie that packs the holy trinity: humour (of the sarcastic variety, not the lame slip on a banana peel variety), action (the producers actually created a strong male AND female character, unlike most other shows which usually involve one of the 2 being completely useless) and romance (not the “oh come on you’ve got to be kidding” variety).
