Tuesday, June 17th, 2008On June 17, 2008 at 8pm (on CBS) AFI will again air its AFI’s 100 Years…. series announcing the top 100 films. Instead of clumping all movies for all genres together, this time around AFI is choosing the top 10 movies of 10 classic genres. Film Tops List #28 covered Animated, Fantasy and Gangster films and List #29 covered Science Fiction, Western and Sports. This final List will cover AFI’s nominations for Mystery, Romantic Comedy, Courtroom Drama and Epic.
MYSTERY
There’s nothing more fun than a really good classic murder mystery ala Agatha Christie’s Poirot starrring David Suchet or a movie like Murder on the Orient Express. Something with whimsy, set in a distant world at a distant time. But I do also love those sexy film noir’s that also transport you to exotic and/or dramatic places. Just love the mystery in mysteries.

- 301 AND THEN THERE WERE NONE
Twentieth Century-Fox, 1945 - 302 THE BIG EASY
Columbia, 1987 - 303 THE BIG HEAT
Columbia, 1953 - 304 THE BIG LEBOWSKI
Gramercy, 1998 - 305 THE BIG SLEEP
Warner Bros., 1946
I love Lauren Bacall in anything. She’s sexy and has great, and true screen presence. She and Bogart have fantastic chemistry in this very well done classic film noir. - 306 BLOW OUT
Filmways, 1981 - 307 BLUE VELVET
DEG, 1986 - 308 THE BOURNE IDENTITY
Universal, 2002
I just was amazed when this film came out because it totally redefined the suspense action genre for me. The writing was compelling, strong and actually believable. Damon was perfect and the directing was becoming. - 309 CHARADE
Universal, 1963 - 310 CHINATOWN
Paramount, 1974 - 311 THE CONVERSATION
Paramount, 1974
I saw The Conversation for the first time in a film class some years ago. Normally I don’t care for 70s films, but this was so very interesting and the directing was very appropriate and complimentary of the subject matter. - 312 D.O.A.
United Artists, 1950 - 313 DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS
TriStar, 1995 - 314 DIAL M FOR MURDER
Warner Bros., 1954
Just a wonderful classic film! - 315 THE FUGITIVE
Warner Bros., 1993
What I liked about this film is that it was a simple concept that could be said to have universal appeal. You rooted for the fugitive because you felt, perhaps, what he was going through could happen to you…maybe. - 316 THE GAME
Polygram, 1997
I was surprised and delighted by Douglas and Penn in The Game. The ending was fabulous! - 317 GASLIGHT
MGM, 1944 - 318 GOSFORD PARK
USA, 2001
I love mystery period pieces and Gosford Park is no exception. - 319 THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES
Twentieth Century-Fox, 1939 - 320 HOUSE OF GAMES
Orion, 1987 - 321 IN A LONELY PLACE
Columbia, 1950 - 322 IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT
United Artists, 1967 - 323 KISS ME DEADLY
United Artists, 1955 - 324 KLUTE
Warner Bros., 1971 - 325 L.A. CONFIDENTIAL
Warner Bros., 1997
There has never been a movie modern movie that has captured the essence, lingo and costume of Hollywood during its height of sensationalism as LA Confidential. Just love this film! - 326 THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI
Columbia, 1948 - 327 THE LAST OF SHEILA
Warner Bros., 1973 - 328 LAURA
Twentieth Century-Fox, 1944 - 329 THE LIST OF ADRIAN MESSENGER
Universal, 1963 - 330 THE MALTESE FALCON
Warner Bros., 1941
Just a classic. Love it! - 331 THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH
Paramount, 1956 - 332 MEMENTO
Newmarket, 2001
One of the few films that have been released that really made you think in a very abstract but still constructive way. The writing is just so smart. - 333 MULHOLLAND DR.
Focus, 2001 - 334 MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS
Paramount, 1974
I love Agatha Christie stories. Orient Express is a classic and very well done book to film adapatation - 335 THE NAKED CITY
Universal, 1948 - 336 NORTH BY NORTHWEST
MGM, 1959 - 337 THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE
MGM, 1946 - 338 REAR WINDOW
Paramount, 1954 - 339 REBECCA
United Artists, 1940 - 340 SE7EN
New Line, 1995
The darkness and grit of this film was really alluring and the writing was sharp. - 341 SEA OF LOVE
Universal, 1989 - 342 A SHOT IN THE DARK
United Artists, 1964 - 343 SLEUTH
Twentieth Century-Fox, 1972 - 344 SPELLBOUND
United Artists, 1945 - 345 SUSPICION
RKO, 1941 - 346 THE THIN MAN
MGM, 1934
Hands down, if The Thin Man doesn’t make it on AFI’s top 10, that’s crazy. The Thin Man is my favorite and one of the best written comedy mystery ever! - 347 THE THIRD MAN
Selznick, 1949 - 348 TO CATCH A THIEF
Paramount, 1955 - 349 THE USUAL SUSPECTS
Gramercy, 1995
Just like The Thin Man, The Usual Suspects deserves a place on not only AFI’s but all major top 10 film lists. It’s one of few films I can honestly say, like The Thin Man, is just perfect! - 350 VERTIGO
Paramount, 1958
