Ellen Degeneres is set to host the 79th Academy Awards on February 25th next year. Jon Stewart hosted last year and wasn’t at all memorable. The best I could say is he looked good in his tux. The 78th Annual Academy Awards itself was a bigger bomb with lackluster presentations of too many clips and not enough star-candy. You watch to see the stars as much as to see which stars win. Nonetheless, Ellen Degeneres may improve things this year if the Academy decides to show endless clips again this year.

Degeneres, is a natural comedian. Jon Stewart is funny, on the Daily Show, but the humor is not as relatable in the context of an awards show. I don’t particularly like talk shows, in fact I hate them. But, I can watch the Ellen Degeneres Show because she’s just a card. She makes fun of herself, is not self-conscious and is actually just plain funny with some silly thrown in. Will Ferrell has the same comedic appeal. Of course the host isn’t what makes a great awards show great alone. But, a bad host makes it difficult to care about anything but the damn awards won. Let’s hope the Academy bounces back from last year’s dull show with a great host, fewer clips and more stars…you know, like a good award show should have.
