Ballet Shoes a Suprise and a Gem

Monday, January 26th, 2009

This is one of those films Netflix had suggested for me and I was very pleasantly surprised and delighted by it. Ballet Shoes is about a three young girls, orphans, who are adopted by an eccentric explorer who disappears for twelve years. In his absence they search for and ultimately find their source for inspiration and ambition.

Supported by an elder sister and aunt, these three girls, Posy, Pauline and Petrova Fossil, discover their respective talents and go after their dreams to become an actress, an aviator and a ballet dancer in 1930s England. The story is familiar but remarkable in that these young girls are not besotted by inappropriate obsessions with boys or typical girlish desires. They each want to make their mark on the world.

The casting is perfect, the acting fantastic, directing and writing on point. It’s a great film. Rent it!

Dressing styles in neoclassical ballet shoes also differ from the traditional tutus associated with classical forms. The latest ballet form is called contemporary ballet. This style is influenced by the former schools of style but has a higher degree of freedom in movements. The style also draws heavily from the discipline of modern dance. In today’s world there are numerous contemporary ballet companies and choreographers.
