Sundance Cinemas Opens with New Vision of Filmgoing Experience

I was perusing the net looking for interesting movie theaters as research for a movie theater I’d like to open up some day. After just reading and writing about the article on $35 Movie Tickets, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Sundance has expanded and now have their own movie theaters, Sundance Cinemas, for showing films of all varieties on a regular basis rather than during its famous festival in January.

$35 for a Movie Ticket at a Luxury Theater Chain?

Would you pay $35 for a movie ticket if the theater had reclining chairs and footrests, digital projection with 2-D and 3-D capability, a lounge and bar serving cocktails and appetizers, concierge service and valet parking? Trailer: 10,000 B.C.

    Penelope, Palansky’s Burton-like film

Doing my usual perusal of the internet for more interesting films to see, I stumbled upon a trailer for Penelope, directed by Mark Palansky and starring Christina Ricci as a modern-day princess who was born with a pig’s snout due to a curse that can only be broken when she finds true love with a prince. Sounds hokey, but when Catherine O’Hara and Christina Ricci are in a film, odds are if you go into it with hesitation, you come out of it surprised, relieved and a little perplexed (in a good way). If the director and the supporting actors are great as well, you’ll come out of it very satisfied.

The story of a young woman with a pig snout seeking true love seems like a Tim Burton plot, but going by the trailer, the film seems less creepy, more upbeat and a little kooky. Think, The Hoel New Hampshire meets Cookie’s Fortune meets Imaginary Heroes meets Edward Scissorhands. Check out the trailer at the official website and judge for yourself. Penelope will be out in theaters in limited release April 6, 2007.

Tobey Maguire, leading man my @ss!

When I saw the poster for The Good German, I thought it was some sort of modern Casablanca where Cate Blanchett would star as Ilsa and George Clooney as Rick. But, no. I got it all wrong ’cause once again I jump to conclusions. Once again I hoped there would be an interesting film, shot in black and white that would be perhaps as nostalgic and/or reminiscent of The Last Picture Show in its simple and perfect portrayal of the life and times of a certain group of folk in a different era. C’est la vie. I resigned myself to thinking that, well, Cate Blanchett being Cate Blanchett, this movie has something in it for me.
