I like to call this current economic state of affairs the “new economy” because it seems like everything we do as far as how we spend our money, especially when it comes to how we spend our money on entertainment, is very different than how we did 10-15 years ago. Going to see a movie is no different than trying to decide which bar doesn’t charge a cover, what online games are free, which phone to buy for the best apps and what phone service to go with that won’t make you want to scream bloody murder because you have more drop calls then successful ones, and so on.

These days, it’s not just hard to decide what movie to watch, but whether to venture out at all to a movie theater to see a movie rather than watching one on TV, on Hulu, downloaded from a torrent site, from Netflix, and so forth. The decision on whether to stay in or go out is not just about laziness (let’s be real), but also about how not to drop $30 on one movie going experience without being certain it’ll be worth it in the end. The movie could suck, or the theater could be filled with high-pitched teeny-boppers or ghetto SOBs – of any race, shape, or size – who are as loud as they are embarrassing.

I think a great documentary is one that inspires you, motivates you or enlightens you. I tend to read more non-fiction than watch, but when I do see a good documentary I wonder why I don’t watch more. Well, I know why. I watch films mostly to escape the real, not be reminded of it. But, fortunately a really good documentary can be as pleasant, and not necessarily about negative events happening in the world today or eons ago.

Why is it that so many of the best films about Hollywood show Hollywood in such bad lighting. (Yes, that was a pun) It’s probably just like celebrity obsession, the ugly is more interesting, the beautiful just breeds envy, which turns into jealousy which makes you want to see the ugly. A vicious circle with nothing in between. Oh, but there is…in the real world. But, we all know the real world and Hollywood are poles apart, that’s why we love Tinseltown, no? But seriously, what’s there to love about constant fame? I’ll take the fortune without the fame please! Until I hit it big, take a gander at my list below while I daydream about my future riches.

I don’t know what it is about film adaptations, but like period pieces and coming of age stories, I just love them and am willing to see just about any in that genre provided the acting is good. As an avid reader and a writer, I really enjoy seeing film adaptations of novels, short stories and plays. Where some people dislike film adaptations that don’t “stay true” to the original story, I am open to seeing a screenwriter’s or director’s screen adaption no matter the change. Plus, it’s rare that an adaptation of any kind can be completely faithful because creative minds don’t think alike. Anyway, some things in literature don’t translate well on screen. A novel is written from the point of view of the protagonist who moves us through the story using thoughts, descriptions, emotion, and other intangibles. Whereas, the screen play, the film is all about action. Besides, artistic license shouldn’t be censored. Although sometimes screen adaptations fall short and the true vein of a novel’s story line can be lost in translation, when a good screenwriter and/or director decides to detract from novel, short story or play one way or another, I’ve been delightfully surprised…and relieved.

2007 was a mixed bag as far as quality films. There were more surprises than disappointments though, unlike last year. But, overall, it seems the quality of films are in an upswing. Live Free or Die Hard was a very, very good sequel to an action series compared to those other sequels in which the last installment were released over a decade ago, namely Rocky VI: Rocky Balboa. There was also a nice sprinkle of smaller films like Death at a Funeral, Waitress, Stardust, 30 Days of Night and Reno 911!: Miami that were just great to watch. Still, there was an unusual amount of sequels, it seems this year, most of which I avoided. Six of which were the top grossing films in 2007 (Superman 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Shrek the Third, The Bourne Ultimatum and Live Free or Die Hard). This should be telling for future years to come, but I’m pretending not to hear. I’ll just look forward to the good films as I always do, sequels or not.
