DeJa Vu, a nice surprise

Thursday, July 26th, 2007

I’m not a big Denzel Washington fan. In fact, I generally make it a point to avoid his films. But, this was a smart film. Not just another Washington vehicle. It’s a science fiction film, but you wouldn’t know it to look at the cover of the DVD or even the previews. I can see why it didn’t do so well in the box-office. You have to think to enjoy it. Damn them!

Basically, Deja Vu is about an AFT agent, Doug Carlin (Washington) who becomes determined (obsessed, whatever) in finding the killer of a woman, Claire, who is linked to the bombing of a New Orleans ferry which had soldiers and their families on it. Turns out, some arm of the government found a way to see into the past using some big machine of sorts. Anyway, Carlin travels to the past to prevent Claire and the hundreds of people on the ferry from being killed. It sounds hokey, but it’s not.

From the beginning you don’t even find out you’re watching a science fiction film until, well, until Washington’s character finds out he’s experiencing science not-so-fiction. Though the film turns out well and leaves you feeling very satisfied, you’re a little unsure where the hell the film’s headed. It’s like going to a new restaurant with somewhat unfamiliar food, but coming out of the restaurant having eaten something tasty and memorable enough to think on for hours and perhaps a few days. Val Kilmer, James Caviezel, and Adam Goldberg also star in the film.
