Elizabeth (The Golden Age): Eh….
Saturday, October 20th, 2007An exploration of the relationship between Elizabeth I (Cate Blanchett) and the adventurer Sir Walter Raleigh (Clive Owen). (imdb.com)
The first Elizabeth was really good, as far as I remember. But this one was weak, despite the extraordinary cast and acting. The writing was a bit contrived, overly simplified lazy and not raw enough. Perhaps I say this because I somewhat recently watched Helen Mirren in the same role as Queen Elizabeth I on HBO’s Elizabeth I, a couple of months back. HBO being HBO, this mini-series was simply spectacular, raw and strong in all categories that matter most (acting, casting, directing, cinematography and writing). You couldn’t ask for a better film on Elizabeth I.
I will say that per usual, Blanchett and Clive Owen were a joy to watch. And the costumes, well, they were beautiful.
