Flawless, is almost flawless

A crime/drama set in 1960 London, where a soon to retire janitor (Michael Caine) convinces a glass-ceiling constrained American executive (Demi Moore) to help him steal a handful of diamonds from their employer, the London Diamond Corporation.
Flawless is a very well written, well acted and intriguing film save for the somewhat cheesy set up of how the story is recounted: a reporter interviews Moore’s character about her life story. It took something away, just a bit, from the film. But certainly not enough to classify it as anything but a very well done and entertaining film.
Moore plays an American executive, Laura Quinn, working for the London Diamond Corporation in the 1960s whose constantly past on promotions because she is a woman. Michael Caine plays a janitor, Mr. Hobbs, who comes up with a brilliant scheme to rob the LDC with Quinn’s help.
The tone of the film is taught, deliberate and simple. The cinematography, sets and costumes take you back to a London that was very unkind to women (and janitors), but the overarching theme is not about soap boxes. Flawless is about getting what’s due in a sense. Moore is very good as Laura Quinn. Very reserved, strong, subtle and intelligent in her character. Admirable. I would like to see Moore in more of these types of meaty roles.
I would definitely recommend Flawless. Rent it!
