Miss Potter, delightful and very satisfying

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

The story of Beatrix Potter (Renee Zellweger), the author of the beloved and best-selling children’s book, “The Tale of Peter Rabbit”, and her struggle for love, happiness and success. (imdb.com)

I never read Beatrix Potter children’s stories like Peter the Rabbit, but I do love a good bio-pic. Miss Potter starring Renee Zellweger, Emily Watson and the ever so lovely Ewan McGregor was a very good bio-pic. The directing and cinematography were especially wonderful. The blend of seamless and occasional animation sequences with the regular scenes was perfect and cute without being mushy or too nostalgic. Unlike many bio-pics, Miss Potter didn’t seemed rushed. The story took its time to unfold, never lingered too long, and every detail of BEatrix Potter’s life was not stuffed into the 100 minutes of the film.

The casting and the acting was perfect. Ewan McGregor played a charming, somewhat bumbling and sweet character while Zellweger’s Potter was a perfect compliment as his on screen love interest. Emily Watson’s role as McGregor’s “spinster” sister and Potter’s friend was nicely folded into the storyline without seeming neither forced or pointless.

What I liked most about Miss Potter is that somehow you got the sense that you could see the English countryside and London the way it was back then and the way Potter saw it. The countryside scenes were especially lush and comforting, the perfect setting to children’s stories.

Miss Potter, well done. Rent it!
