Happy Accidents is a happy movie

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

I’ve always liked Maria Tomei. She’s got a certiain something as an actress. Very watchable, likeable and you’re always wondering what she’ll do next. Though, I did find it a little odd that she won an Oscar for her role in My Cousin Vinny, but hey, when have the Academy Awards ever given awards that make sense. I also like Mark Ruffalo. He’s got this strange charm. Something very New York about him, too. As a New Yorker, I like it. He’s got a certain something too. So, two actors who have a certain undefineable something in one movie is something to watch.

Tomei plays Ruby, a woman who always seems to date losers, or rather, wounded men incapable of relationships. Ruffalo plays Sam, a quirky wounded type who suffers from a sort of mental illness that happens to be the result of a sort of time traveler’s jetlag. Apparently Sam found her picture one day in the future and decided to go back to the past to find her, convinced they were meant to be together. Yeah, sounds silly, i know. But, at the end of the movie I’m totally convinced time travel is possible. Probably ’cause I can be quite gullable. Also because it’s just a sweet film and both Ruffalo and Tomei are great in it. They have perfect chemistry. Because Ruby remains reluctant, but open, throughout most of the film, so does the audience. I think it’s the best way to convince an audience of something if a major character, or a few major characters, remain as skeptical but hopeful as the average audience. Sort of the same M.O. as History of Violence.

Happy Accidents is a good, fun and solid romantic comedy. And like all good romantic comedies, it doesn’t take itself too seriously and it leaves you feeling all warm and fuzzy inside…and not nauseous from too much sweetness. Rent it!
