Sex and the City Movie, Damn Ab-Fabulous!

Set four years after we last saw the ladies, Carrie (Saah Jessica Parker), Samantha (Kim Cattrall), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon), and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) negotiate their friendships, romances, and careers in New York City. At the center of it all is Carrie’s pending nuptials to Mr. Big (Chris Noth).
Sex and the City the Movie is perhaps the best TV series to film adaptation, hands down. SATC is one of those shows whose fan base is strong, specific and loyal sort of like Star Wars fans…but probably more attractive (I kid!). So, when a movie for SATC is comes out, there’s no doubt every woman, gay man and occasional straight (sometimes metrosexual) man fan will not only go see it but have certain expectations.
Now before I saw the film, I read a couple of reviews and most were positive. One however, stood out as particularly negative and clearly not written by someone who watched the show religiously as I and other loyal SATC fans, which is not to say anyone who hadn’t watched the show religiously could not thoroughly enjoy the movie. SATC the movie was as meaty, fun, dramatic and fabulous as the film because the plot was believable within the context of the history of the show, the characters stayed true, the fashion was just as amazing as ever and the directing was strong.
It was interesting watching a film in a theater with such a following. Throughout the showing, there were ooing, awing, and other sentimental collective girly expressions. It was a little annoying because I’m not girly at all and love SATC because the women are all individual, strong and not one dimensional. The ooing and awing came at times of typical rights of passage or sentimental moments for a typical woman like Carrie’s wedding, shots of a baby or puppy, and other sentimental moments.
Nonetheless, I look forward to getting Sex and the City the Movie on DVD. And though there is a bit of buzz about a sequel, I’d rather have Samantha, Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte ride off into the sunset of romantic bliss rather than take anything away from the almost perfect final film. Almsot perfect because Jennfier Hudson’s character as Carrie’s assistant was a bit off putting because Hudson’s acting is simply medicore. But, it certainly didn’t spoil the film. Anyway, I highly recommend this film and it is definitely one to watch with at least one other person!

I thought Hudson was great - very realistic, which I like in my actors. Of all the stories, hers was the most rushed and poorly developed. The movie would have needed another half an hour to fix that - but I would have been happy to watch it.
I loved the film and will buy the dvd.

Definitely, Hudson’s was the most rushed. I think she was one of those characters that served a specific purpose and to reveal something about the major character, and then when her job is done, the character is done as well. I know there’s a name for that type of character in a film…can’t remember what it is…
