Roger Corman’s cult classic film DEATH RACE 2000 gets a fast-moving follow-up with director Paul W.S. Anderson (AVP: ALIEN VS. PREDATOR) behind the wheel. Jason Statham (THE TRANSPORTER) plays Jensen Ames, a prisoner who is serving a sentence for a crime that he didn’t commit. But in this futuristic society, Ames can compete for his freedom with a victory in a brutal three-day race.
THE SCORPION KING 2 uncovers the origins of the 2002 summer blockbuster which starred Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Mathayus, the most fearsome desert warrior of the ancient world. Reaching deep into the past, this prequel begins with the king as a 13-year-old peasant boy (Michael Copon) who witnesses the kidnapping and death of his father at the hands of the terrifying Sargon (played by towering UFC Heavyweight Randy Couture). Thirsty for vengeance, young Mathayus trains at the Order of the Black Scorpion to sharpen his skills as a killing machine, then journeys to the underworld to retrieve the one sword that can help him defeat Sargon. When the burgeoning Scorpion King finally comes to blows with his murderous rival, the fate of the entire human race hangs in the balance.
England’s Mike Leigh (VERA DRAKE) directs this comedy that relies heavily on his actors’ talent for improvisation. Sally Hawkins (Leigh’s VERA DRAKE) plays Poppy, a teacher who manages to keep a smile on her face, regardless of what comes her way.
After the success of the period film THE ILLUSIONIST, director Neil Burger turns to more contemporary fare with the drama THE LUCKY ONES. Rachel McAdams, Tim Robbins, and Michael Pena star as a trio of soldiers who are home in America on leave. A blackout causes massive flight cancellations, and the three people decide to drive to Pittsburgh for what turns out to be a very revealing road trip.
